What is hypnosis?
Hypnotherapy is a heightened state of concentration and focused attention. Hypnosis allows you to be more open to suggestions for making healthful changes in your perceptions, sensations, emotions, memories, thoughts, or behaviors.
Let's start with the myths about hypnosis.
Myth 1: Hypnosis isn’t real. It’s a form of entertainment.
-
Hypnosis isn’t a stage act or some magical trick. While stage hypnosis may appear theatrical, real hypnosis is a natural mental state you experience daily—like when you're fully absorbed in a movie or driving on autopilot. In these moments, your mind bypasses critical thinking and shifts into selective (often unconscious) focus.

Myth 2: You lose consciousness when you’re hypnotized.
-
Most people remember everything that happens during hypnosis. You remain aware of who you are, and where you are and remember what happened during a hypnosis session.

Myth 3: You’re under the control of your hypnotherapist when you’re hypnotized.
-
As your hypnotherapist, I guide you through the process, but hypnosis is something you do for yourself. You’re always in control and can’t be made to do anything against your will or reveal anything you want to keep private. You remain fully aware and in control of your behavior throughout the session. While hypnosis helps you become more open to suggestions, it never forces you to experience anything you don’t want to.

Myth 4: Hypnosis is nothing more than deep sleep.
- Hypnosis is often mistaken for deep sleep, but it’s not the same as sleeping. While some deeper forms of hypnosis may make you appear as though you’re asleep due to the stillness and relaxation of your body, you remain fully awake and aware throughout the process.
How Do People Experience Hypnosis?
People describe the experience of hypnosis in various ways. Some say it feels like being deeply focused or trance-like, where you're so absorbed that external distractions fade away. It's similar to getting lost in a captivating TV show or engrossing book, where you don’t notice conversations around you or even a barking dog. This heightened focus is often accompanied by a sense of calm and relaxation. Many find the experience enjoyable and peaceful, with their concentration feeling more intense, yet soothing at the same time.
